I came across Kristen Haines aka Luna Goods, a few years ago on Instagram. And who couldn't help falling head over heals with her honest and dreamy documentation of life with a young family along side caring for her animals. Her photography sings with life and emotion. You feel the raw nature, the seasons come crashing through the lense.
Amongst the wild children, horses, chickens, sheep and dogs she finds time to hand stitch leather goods and of course take photographs.
We wanted to get to know her a little better.
What inspires you to create?
One of the things that inspires me the most is the material I work with. Leather, sheepskin, it’s life and story, how it feels and looks. The desire to honour the animal it came from and to create an heirloom.
How do you create ritual in your daily life?
My life is very full, my kids, work, caring for our land and animals, riding and training my horses. My rituals are mostly in the simple moments. Sitting in the sun for morning coffee, moments of breath with my horse Willow, walking around the land, watching the sunset, or sitting outside through a summer storm. Simple rituals that fill my soul, that ground me, that make me want to create.
What does your creative practice look like?
I create in my home, I have a small studio off our living room. After chores in the morning, I enter my studio, but with a young kiddo still at home I am always shifting gears. Work life balance is not something I have mastered and really flows with the seasons. When it’s cold out, i spend more time working, fitting in time to work in the dark after the kids are asleep, enjoying the coziness of stitching while wrapped in a blanket. In summer, work is something I do only a couple hours a day and I bring it outside under the trees, I still love it, I just love my garden, playing with the kids and my animals more.
Who would you name as your inspirations?
Women, the way they move through their day, their style, the desire to create a piece that will live with them for years to come. I love how unique style can be and how expressive it is, how you can say so much about who you are without saying a word.
What song is in repeat on your ears this week?
I’m honestly not a huge music listener. But my friend Jenna shared with me Homesteady by Flatland Cavalry which really resonated.
Kristen wears the Carousel Horse charm in 9k gold and the Cameo, Sweet Grass Braid, Solar Return and the Sonnet rings in gold plated brass.
